Burundi: 6 Are Killed During Protests | Burundi: 6 Are Killed During Protests |
(35 minutes later) | |
Six people were killed Wednesday as protesters clashed with security forces in a neighborhood southeast of the capital, Bujumbura, the police said. Pierre Nkurikiye, deputy spokesman for the Burundian police, said that five protesters and a police officer were killed in the confrontation. He said the police had been trying to disarm protesters in Mutakura when they came under attack and used lethal force to disperse the attackers. He said the police recovered military equipment, including two machine guns and ammunition, during the operation. A separate grenade attack wounded seven people, he said. Burundi has been hit by violence since the announcement in April that the governing party had nominated President Pierre Nkurunziza to be its candidate in a presidential election set for July 15. Protesters say Mr. Nkurunziza must step down after serving two terms, the maximum allowed under the country’s Constitution. At least 77 people have died in street protests since April. |
