Firefighters have rescued 14 people after fire broke out in a tenement flat at Govan in Glasgow.

Three men and two women were taken to the Southern General Hospital for medical checks.

The fire broke out in the first floor of the building in Drive Road just before 0500 GMT.

Firefighters from Govan, Cowcaddens and Maryhill attended. The cause of the fire is not known and an investigation is under way.

Speaking at the scene, the head of operations for the South of Glasgow at Strathclyde Fire and Rescue, Group Commander John Rae, said the outcome could have been a lot worse because many people had been asleep when the fire broke out.

"If it hadn't been for the actions of initial crews attending and the plan that was put into place and implemented then we could have been facing some severe injuries at least", he said.
