Children have donned Spiderman outfits and helped bake themed cakes for the fourth birthday of William Tyrrell, the little boy they never knew but say they miss.

Hundreds of photos and videos have been posted on Facebook with the hashtag #givehimback and #bringhimhome as strangers band together online to show support for little William’s family.

“Happy 4th birthday William, my boy blew out four candles for you and made a wish,” wrote Ashley Louise Young on a Facebook birthday event supported by more than 99,000 people.

Maggie Frangie, from Blacktown in Sydney’s west, threw a party and invited her nieces and nephews along. They blew out candles and wished for his return.

“We made some Spiderman cupcakes for him, then we went outside said a prayer and released some balloons,” the 28-year-old said. “He’s only a little boy, it hurts, I wouldn’t want that to happen to any of my family.”

Frangie said she took the opportunity to warn the children about talking to strangers.

“I hope and pray that he’s still alive,” she said.

The young boy was three when he went missing from his grandmother’s property at Kendall on the NSW mid-north coast last September.

A “Where’s William?” campaign, including a website and Facebook page, was launched by NSW Police on Friday. In April, police said they were investigating the possibility William might have been a victim of a “pedophile ring”.

Detective Inspector Gary Jubelin expressed the hope William was still alive despite nearly nine months having passed since he vanished.

“Until there is evidence that conclusively proves William is deceased, police are treating the matter as if William is still alive and that’s the way we’re pursuing the investigation,” he said.
