Chad 'suicide attack' targets police in N'Djamena Chad suicide bomb attack kills many in N'Djamena
(about 2 hours later)
A suicide bomb attack has targeted a police building in the Chadian capital N'Djamena, officials say. At least 23 people have been killed and more than 100 injured in suicide attacks in the Chadian capital N'Djamena, officials say.
Some witnesses say they heard multiple explosions, and there are unconfirmed reports of casualties. Attackers on motorcycles blew themselves up outside two police buildings, say witnesses.
It is not clear who carried out the attack, but Nigeria's Islamist group Boko Haram will be suspected, a BBC correspondent says. A government minister appeared to blame Nigeria's militant Islamist group Boko Haram in an address on state TV, Reuters news agency reports.
A regional task force to tackle Boko Haram is being set up in the city - never previously targeted by the group. The group has not said if it was behind the attack.
Chad has sent troops into neighbouring Nigeria to tackle the group, which often carries out suicide attacks. Boko Haram had "made a mistake targeting Chad", and would be "neutralised", said Communications Minister Hassan Sylla Bakari, quoted by Reuters, adding that four of the attackers had been killed.
Chad has been a key partner in Nigeria's fight against the militants.
It has sent troops into neighbouring Nigeria to fight the group, and the headquarters of a regional force is being set up in N'Djamena.
The group has never targeted N'Djamena before, but it often carries out suicide attacks.
