Two men are in custody following the death of a man near Tower Bridge early Saturday morning. The bridge was shut for several hours, causing a city-centre gridlock.

The police and London Ambulance Service were called to a disturbance near to the bridge at 3am on Saturday morning, where they found a critically injured man.

The victim, thought to be in his twenties, died in hospital shortly after arrival. The Met Police launched a murder investigation into the death this morning.

Though the man has not been formally identified, the next of kin have been informed.

Tower Bridge was shut following the incident and reopened and 8:45am, a police spokesman confirmed. Nearby roads were gridlocked and buses diverted to avoid the closed roads.

Detective Chief Inspector Rebecca Reeves, said: “The area around Tooley Street has a popular nightlife and I would ask that anyone who had been to a club in the area and may have witnessed the assault to contact us.

“A number of night buses also use this route and it is possible that someone travelling to work, or heading home, may have seen something that will assist our investigation.”

The two men who have been arrested in connection to the incident were, police said, being held at different south London stations.
