Reporter JD Miles of Dallas’ CBS affiliate has interviewed the father of James Boulware (the suspect identified himself as Boulware to police but authorities have yet to confirm him as such).
Miles said Boulware’s father “wanted to talk and explain his son’s state of mind”.

Texas attorney general Ken Paxton has released a statement on the shooting, which reads:
“The attack on the Dallas police department and its officers is a dangerous reminder of the unpredictable threats our men and women in law enforcement face every day. Led by chief David Brown, the department’s response has been professional, working to end this situation as quickly, and as safely, as possible.
“Law enforcement, be they our local police officers, state law enforcement or federal agents, stand between law-abiding citizens, safe communities and those whose intentions are to destroy lives and our sense of security. We support and appreciate their selfless and effective efforts to keep our cities and states safe.”

Officers are now right up alongside the van and peering through its windows, though it’s hard to tell what precisely they are doing from the distant camera feed.
They have not yet said whether they have detonated the water charge.

A heavily armored police truck has just driven up into the parking lot and ushered out the other vehicles there besides the suspect’s van.
Police major Max Geron has reiterated that police “believe it likely” that the suspect is dead, but adds that “confirmation is premature” until officers can safely inspect the van and determine his condition.

Most of the police cars have moved far away from the suspect’s van, which is sitting in a restaurant parking lot in the suburb of Hutchins.
A bomb robot briefly wheeled up to the van and then it also moved away. Major Max Geron says that police have been prepping for a safe detonation of the water charge.

Dallas police chief David Brown announced earlier this morning that the suspect, who named himself as James Boulware but whose identity he was cautious not to confirm, was shot by a Swat team sniper.
4.35pm BST

Although police say they cannot yet confirm the suspect is James Boulware, as he named himself during a 911 call after his attack on the Dallas headquarters, they have been able to say that a man by that name has a record.
Chief David Brown has said that police had responded previously to three incidents of domestic violence involving a man with that name.
Records show that a James Boulware from the area had two charges of assault dismissed in the past two years, as well as a charge dismissed for aggravated assault with a deadly weapon more than a decade ago.
Scott Gordon, a reporter for the local NBC affiliate, has contacted Boulware’s mother.

Police have gained access to the vehicle and are trying to defuse any explosives with what major Max Geron describes as a “water charge”.
Geron adds that the bomb techs “believe black powder [was] used in pipe bombs at the Dallas police headquarters – no C4 detected there.”
Before he cut off negotiations, the suspect had told police that he had C4.
There’s still no word as to the suspect’s condition, who hasn’t made contact with police in over four hours. Media and even Geron are saying they “believe it likely that he is deceased.”
