Some of the 200 animals died in the fire, caused after the vehicle burst a number of tyres, but many escaped. Durham Police said 16 animals were put down, three of which were shot by armed officers drafted in to assist vets.
The fire was sparked by a burst tyre on the three-tier vehicle.

Insp Peter Foster, of Durham Police, said armed officers were shooting any animals which were too badly injured to be saved. The transporter was travelling on the southbound carriageway when the incident happened.
Police have sealed the road off and a vet is at the scene. Diversions are in place while surviving animals are transferred to another vehicle. The road was closed in both directions for more than four hours. The northbound carriageway was reopened at 0730 GMT. Police estimated the southbound would be open again later in the morning.
