Egypt: State Dept. Says It Won’t Meet With Brotherhood Group in Washington
Version 0 of 1. United States officials will not meet with visiting members of a delegation from Egypt’s Muslim Brotherhood, a State Department spokesman said Tuesday. Egypt summoned the American ambassador in Cairo to show displeasure at Muslim Brotherhood figures’ visiting Washington for a private conference, sources familiar with the matter said Monday. The State Department spokesman, Jeff Rathke, said Tuesday that no meeting had ever been planned, adding, “We haven’t reversed a decision.” The tensions reflect a clash between American diplomats’ desire to deal with the whole political spectrum in Egypt and a fear of alienating Egypt’s president, Abdel Fattah el-Sisi, the former army chief who toppled a Muslim Brotherhood-led government in 2013. |
