A light aircraft has crashed close to Rutland Water reservoir.

Leicestershire Fire and Rescue Service confirmed four fire engines and a heavy rescue unit were called to Whitwell Road, Empingham just after 1530 GMT.

It is understood the pilot of the aircraft was the only person on board but details of his or her condition are still to be released.

Leicestershire police said debris from the single-engined aircraft was found in an area of about 100 square metres.

Ch Supt Damon Tilley said: "A privately owned aircraft crashed close to the shore of Rutland Water but on dry land.

"When it crashed there was no secondary fire or ignition or anything like that, so at the scene we just have debris."

Weather in the county had been very cloudy all day with patches of thick fog in many places.
