Victoria Beckham goes shopping. Nothing new in that. Was it Prada, Gucci, Dolce&Gabanna, Cavalli? No, Oxfam.

The woman known worldwide for the clothes she wears was spotted in a charity shop. True, it was Oxfam in London's very trendy Notting Hill, but hardly her usual haunt.

She was there to meet one of its volunteers, Joe Mitty, 87, who opened the UK's first charity shop almost 60 years ago. As well as talking to him, Victoria reportedly bought a dress for £20. But what other bargains did she miss?

The Magazine heads down to the shop to see if she could have kitted herself out in the latest trends for a fraction of the price of her usual designer threads.

Chloe, Marc Jacobs, Marni, Anna Sui and Mulberry - they all have a tunic dress in their autumn collection. The dresses were a key style in the swinging 60s and today's version takes inspiration from that era.

Alex Curran (left) and our model If they're such an essential this season, how could Victoria have missed the little number, on the right of this picture? It may be made by the lesser-known - maybe even unknown - fashion house Lady Carol, but it's vintage, which ticks another box on this season's list of fashion must-haves.

Wear such a dress with opaque tights and ankle boots or flat pumps and look like you've stepped off the catwalk.

Two for the price of one. Oh yes, ankle boots are teamed with everything, while leopard print is definitely king of the jungle this season. The leopard-print look is so hot that even American Vogue editor Anna Wintour has been spotted wearing it.

Easy tiger Prada and Marc Jacobs have worked the print into their collections, and it is easier to list who hasn't featured ankle boots - no-one.

But with such a bold print there's a risk of looking like Bet Lynch. Fashionistas advise a little restraint, keeping the rest of your outfit relatively modest.

Not sure if these boots could ever be described as modest, but we like them. They're reminiscent of something Victoria might have worn in her Spice Girl days, but the Magazine is sure she could still pull this flamboyant look off.

Kate's wearing them - need we say more? Throw those skinny jeans in the bin and embrace this wide-legged alternative. But, as always, there are rules about wearing them that should not be broken.

Kate (left, obviously) and our model They have featured in collections by Marc Jacobs, Chloe and Zac Posen. But before you get excited about there being a comfortable fashion trend for once, the point of boyfriend jeans is that they should look louche, relaxed and elegant - not baggy and comfy.

Avoid if you are petite, as they will drown you, or if you have big thighs, as they will appear even more chunky. A great look if you're tall and slim - a sentence women worldwide are sick of reading.

This pair were a bargain, but look more like your dad's jeans than your boyfriend's. Again, Moss makes a style look so easy to wear when the reality is quite different.

Unhygienic apparently. Never mind, Posh has enough money in the bank to buy several pairs brand new.

But she'd better make sure they are metallic. Black leggings are so five-minutes-ago darling.

Nice boots, and a pair which neatly encapsulate yet another hot trend in addition to leopard print and ankle boots - them's be whore's shoes. Which are also everywhere, as your pic of footless tights demonstrates.Patsy, Sheffield

I was wondering if she deliberately avoided the boots because she knows the previous owner - they're surely Scary or Ginger Spice's?Jennifer, Netherlands, ex-UK

Most of my clothes come from charity shops and I'm extremely stylish. It's only the snob factor that allows someone to boast over a canny "vintage" find yet sneer at something from their local charity shop.Chandra, London, England

I'm of the opinion that any item of clothing you buy should be built to last. Never throw anything away unless it's beyond repair. My reasoning is that all fashion is recycled, whatever items are just going out of fashion now will probably be back in fashion in five to 10 years time, at which point, the items you kept will be "vintage" and worth three times as much as when you first bought them...Heather, Wolverhampton

Well done Victoria Beckham. This down-to-earth woman always makes an effort to support charities and does it in a fun yet graceful way.Matthew Jones, Cardiff

Maybe Real should donate David Beckham to Oxfam - most of his sequins may have fallen off but someone's bound to want to squeeze a bit more wear out of him. I'd pay up to £2.99 as it's a good cause.Glenn Roeder, the Toon

Theres nothing down to earth about Victoria Beckham, in fact shes so far detached from the normal world she could be on Jupiter. (Her recent style guide suggested that women buy childrens clothes from gap for a 'fitted' look) Yes well done Victoria for shopping in Oxfam, you've done the nation a great service. Next week : Kate Moss goes to tesco.Rachael, Middlesbrough
I've bought loads of practically new Levis jeans and surfer/scuba diver t shirts from charity shopsall for a fraction of what they'd cost new. I also picked up a now deleted trance compilation cd for a couple of pounds rahter than 25 pounds at Hard To Find Records. Ok so the fashion police have probably died from a fit, but then that's yet another benefit for us normal people.Luke, London, UK
If you shop at charity shops in affluent areas, you can pick up some pretty good bargains. Ben Sherman suit for £15 suited me fine (arf arf!) Ed, london uk
I've always maintained that Oxfam shops are a good social barometer - what they are given, how they price their goods, what people want to buy from them, and how these change over the years - reveals a lot about an area and its changing social, economic and cultural parameters. Does yours sell antiquarian books? When was the last time you saw real fur there? Is the price of Vinyl rising?Dave, Edinburgh
I understand Oxfam have an 'originals' store on Oxford Street. That's where they sell any designer gear that finds it's way into their shops. There's an 'originals' in Leeds too. It's all good quality stock and reasonable prices too.John Bates, Leeds
