Four people including two firefighters have been injured after an explosion at a South Australian power plant.

The explosion happened shortly before 11am on Sunday, sparking a fire on the fifth floor of the power station about 9km south of Port Augusta.

Country fire service spokesman Daniel Hamilton said firefighters were working to prevent 70 tonnes of coal adjacent to the power plant from igniting.

The metropolitan fire service and country fire service crews joined forces to battle the blaze.

Two firefighters were being treated in hospital and one of the injured had been taken to Adelaide.

Police and fire investigators were at the scene on Sunday afternoon.
