A 10-year-old girl from Cornwall who has raised more than £40,000 for terminally ill children has been recognised by the prime minister. Madison Glinski took the streets of St Ives with her violin to raise money for a children's hospice. She has become the latest to receive a Point of Light Award which recognises outstanding individual volunteers who make a difference in their communities. Madison set an initial target of £500 but has now raised £40,500. She decided to raise money for the Little Harbour Children's Hospice in St Austell after making a New Year's resolution. In just over a year, she has raised tens of thousand of pounds and her efforts have been recognised both here and abroad. "Mum said I had a letter from the prime minister, when I was in the car coming home from school," Madison said. "I opened the letter and I was shocked to see it was a certificate congratulating me on what I'd done." Madison has also donated money to a family who had a funeral collection fund stolen and her mother, Terrasa, has described her as a "little stick of dynamite". "We are having well-wishers from all over the world, and it's certainly inspiring Madison," Mrs Glinski added. "Here we are 14 months later, chomping her way towards £50,000 pounds and it's just rollercoastered. "She says to me, 'I'm just a little Cornish girl playing my violin in St Ives' - it's more than that and it's certainly helping Little Harbour as well, putting them on the map. "Nothing seems to surprise us with Madison, but to get this recognition - we're just blown away by it. She's very grateful." |
