Nicola Sturgeon has been touted as a possible guest on Jon Stewart's The Daily Show while on a tour of New York and Washington DC.

The much-lauded satirical political programme, which sees Stewart discuss various topical issues, would be seen as a coup for the Scottish National Party leader Nicola Sturgeon.

Sturgeon is due to visit the United States next week in order to promote Scotland as "a great place to live, visit, do business, study and invest".

Tony Blair, Gordon Brown, Barack Obama, Joe Biden, Hillary Clinton, Madeleine Albright and Abdullah II King of Jordan have all appeared on Stewart's programme in the past. Stewart is unafraid to mock his guests as part of his interviews.

"We'll wait and see," was Sturgeon's response to the rumours she was set to appear on the programme.

Sturgeon has said of her trip: "We know that Scotland is a great place to live, visit, do business, study and invest. That's why it is so important that Scotland continues to build our reputation right around the world.

"As part of my visit I am also looking forward to learning from the experience of New York and Washington DC particularly in raising attainment, addressing inequality and discussing with the World Bank and IMF how to build the link between economic growth and inequality."

Stewart is due to step down from the programme in August after16 years at the helm.
