A 22-year-old American woman was mauled to death Monday in South Africa when a lion jumped into her vehicle through an open window at a wildlife park on the outskirts of Johannesburg, the police and other officials said. Her companion, a South African man, was hurt and taken to a hospital. “He was fighting the lion off inside the car,” Scott Simpson, assistant director of operations at Lion Park, told a local radio station. The two were not identified, and it was not clear what state the woman was from. She died while paramedics tried to save her, Mr. Simpson said.
