Police are questioning a 17-year-old boy over a gang attack which has left a man critically injured in hospital. A 17-year-old boy arrested after a man was critically injured in a gang attack has been released on bail.

The teenager handed himself to police on Monday and is being held on suspicion of violent disorder. The teenager has been released on police bail until Tuesday 11 March, pending further inquiries.

Mr Burns was taken to Tameside General Hospital and was later transferred to Hope Hospital, where he remains in a critical condition. The victim was taken to hospital where his condition is now described as stable.
Single blow
Ch Supt Zoe Hamilton, divisional commander for Tameside, said Mr Burns was knocked to the floor with a single blow by one of the gang.
"The others with this person who hit the man are witnesses who we want to come forward," she said.
"Some of the group appeared to help him when he was on the ground."
House-to-house inquiries are being conducted and police patrols have been stepped up in the area.
Mr Burns had been drinking and watching the Manchester derby football match in the Strawberry Gardens pub, where boxer Ricky Hatton also dropped in to celebrate Manchester City's win.

Earlier, acting landlady Sharon Cullen said: "It's awful news. He's a really nice lad who was coming here now for a few years and he's never been any bother."
Miss Cullen said there was no trouble inside the pub on Sunday night but confirmed the area had problems with youngsters hanging around the streets.
Three of the offenders are described as white and aged about 17.
One of them was about 6ft, slim and was wearing a brown hooded top and riding a bike.
A second offender is described as being slim with a thin face and was wearing a grey hooded zip-up jacket with the hood up.
A third offender is described as being of stocky build with a shaven head and was wearing a black tracksuit.
