University of North Carolina to replace KKK leader's name on campus building
Version 0 of 1. Trustees at the University of North Carolina are renaming a classroom building so that it no longer carries the name of a Ku Klux Klan leader. The university’s Chapel Hill campus said Thursday that Saunders Hall – named after William Saunders, a prominent member of the violent white supremacist group after the civil war in the 19th century – will be renamed Carolina Hall. The decision reverses one made in 1920 to honor Saunders. The building now houses the geography department. Trustees also adopted a 16-year moratorium against renaming other places on the campus, which was chartered in 1789, making it the country’s oldest public university. |
