As if Hillary Clinton has not had enough questions to answer about controversial connections of the Clinton Foundation, a report from the Daily Beast has shown contributions to the foundation from Fifa, world football’s governing body.

The report emerged Wednesday, the same day several top Fifa executives were arrested in Switzerland on corruption charges that date back more than 20 years. Reports say the charges against 14 Fifa officials include wire fraud, racketeering and money laundering, valued at more than $100 million.

The Clinton Foundation received between $50,000 and $100,000 from Fifa, according to the foundation’s website. It also has received donations from organisations in Qatar, the country that controversially was awarded the 2022 World Cup.

Bill Clinton was the honorary chairman of the US bid for the 2022 event and eventually was runner-up to Qatar.

After Qatar beat out the US for the World Cup, the Qatar 2022 Supreme Committee, along with the State of Qatar, “committed to utilizing its research and development for sustainable infrastructure at the 2022 FIFA World Cup to improve food security in Qatar, the Middle East, and other arid and water-stressed regions throughout the world,” according to the Clinton Foundation website.

No estimated cost was listed for that project on the foundation’s website, but the Supreme Committee donated between $250,000 and $500,000 in 2014, and the State of Qatar gave between $1 million and $5 million in previous years, the Daily Beast reported.

No Qatari officials have been arrested in the Fifa sting, but questions have long swirled around the legitimacy of awarding the 2022 World Cup to Qatar.

The Clinton Foundation did not return an email seeking comments in time for this story.
