Covered in blood
He repeatedly bludgeoned his six-year-old son with the car jack before he suddenly stopped the assault and walked to the main road for help.
Christine Laing QC, prosecuting, said he flagged down a car and told its occupants "you have got to come and help me, I've hurt one of my kids".
The court was told witnesses said the children in the car were screaming and covered in blood.
Ms Laing said the father, when asked "why things were so bad", had told one of the witnesses he was in debt, his boys had learning difficulties and he could not cope.
The court was also told he and his wife had marital problems.
The father had previously pleaded guilty to two counts of administering a noxious substance to the two boys.
