(about 2 hours later)
An Air France flight from Paris was escorted by US fighter jets to New York’s John F Kennedy International Airport on Monday after an anonymous threat was made against the flight, according to WABC television. An Air France flight from Paris was escorted by US fighter jets to New York’s John F Kennedy International Airport on Monday after an anonymous threat was made against the flight.
Flight 22 from Charles de Gaulle Airport landed safely, an airport official said. It was to be taken to a secure area at the New York airport to be searched, according to ABC News. Authorities later said two planes were searched at JFK, after threats were made against them.
Citing an unnamed senior US official, ABC News said the Maryland State Police Fusion Center, which handles intelligence gathering, had received an anonymous call of a chemical weapons threat on board the plane. ABC said the threat was not considered credible. The FBI said US military jets scrambled on Monday morning to escort the Air France flight into the city after an anonymous caller claimed a chemical weapon was aboard the aircraft.
A spokesman said the Maryland State Police was preparing to release a public statement on the incident. Authorities said the airliner landed safely and a search found no weapons, and added that a Saudi Arabian Airlines flight was being checked out because of a threat.
Representatives of the North American Aerospace Defense Command and the FBI, which also were handling the investigation, were not available for comment. The FBI said it believed the same caller made the threats and the airliners were being screened as a precaution.
Air France also could not be reached for comment.
