Officers in court for crash death

Two police officers from Lancashire have appeared in court charged with causing death by dangerous driving.

Pc Sean Schofield, 38, and Pc Andrew Massingham, 41, are charged in connection with the death of retired academic Peter Williams.

The 67-year-old, of Bolton-le-Sands, died when his car collided with a marked police car in Carnforth, near Lancaster, on 2 November 2006.

The case at Liverpool Magistrates' Court was adjourned until 27 February.

A preliminary hearing will then take place at Liverpool Crown Court.

Lead vehicle

The police car was in a convoy of two vehicles on a training run to test an electronic speed camera device when the incident happened.

Mr Williams was in the car with his wife Jean, who were on their way to the Yorkshire Dales for the weekend.

Mr Williams suffered severe chest and leg injuries and died in Lancaster Royal Infirmary the following day.

His wife sustained multiple fractures, while Pc Schofield suffered internal bruising and his colleague suffered a broken leg.

Pc Massingham was driving the lead vehicle in the convoy.

The Independent Police Complaints Commission (IPCC) investigated the case.
