Porbeagles, which are listed as vulnerable on the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species, are among 30 species of sharks found in British waters.
They are hunted commercially in parts of the world and accidental catching by fisherman has contributed to their decline in the North Atlantic.
Conservation groups have campaigned against porbeagle fishing, saying not enough is being done to protect their numbers.
According to the International Shark Attack File (ISAF) there have only been two unprovoked shark attacks in England since 1847, neither of which were fatal.
