A 19-year-old charity worker has died after becoming ill while trekking in the north of India.

Niamh Campbell, from Clackmannanshire, had been in Bangalore since August teaching English, maths and science as part of the Coll-based Project Trust.

On Monday, she was trekking in the Himachal Pradesh area when she fell ill and was taken to hospital in Manali.

Project Trust chief executive Ingrid Emerson said she was a "lovely girl and an impressive and committed teacher".

Ms Emerson said Ms Campbell was "always hard-working and considerate of others".

She said: "Our thoughts and deepest condolences are with her family and her fellow volunteers, and our priority now is to provide them with whatever support we can."

Project Trust's overseas director has travelled to India to provide support on the ground.

The charity stressed that Ms Campbell had been trekking as part of a group led by an experienced guide from a reputable company which specialises in such trips.

The Campbell family said they had no comment to make.

Project Trust said it had organised volunteering placements for 6,921 school-leavers since the charity first started in 1967.
