Another player exodus at Blackpool after relegation from Championship

Blackpool are facing another summer of upheaval following their relegation from the Championship after announcing the release of 17 members of their squad, potentially leaving the Seasiders with just seven players. Tomasz Cywka, Nathan Delfouneso, Tony McMahon, Nyron Nosworthy and François Zoko are among the 17 players that Blackpool have decided against activating options or offering contracts to while five players, including Sheffield Wednesday’s Gary Madine, are returning to parent clubs. Ranger has been awol since November, Cubero has work permit problems and Orlandi’s deal involves a release clause. It could therefore leave the incoming manager with just the six players already under contract as well as the new signing Jarrett Rivers – and without a goalkeeper – when Blackpool begin their pre-season at the end of June. It is a state of affairs similar to last summer when Blackpool were forced to cancel a pre-season trip to Spain in July with only eight contracted players while they did not have a goalkeeper until four days before the start of the season. Blackpool did also confirm that the former Tottenham midfielder Jamie O’Hara has been offered a new contract but he is not guaranteed to stay and supporters will hardly be filled with optimism following the farcical end to their season when their match against Huddersfield was abandoned after fans invaded the pitch to voice their dismay with the club’s owners, the Oyston family. Lee Clark also resigned as manager in the wake of the club’s relegation, Blackpool finishing bottom of the Championship with 26 points, 13 behind Wigan, who were second bottom. |
