London City Airport flights resume after runway 'stress fracture'
http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-london-32792499 Version 0 of 1. Flights have resumed at London City Airport after emergency work was carried out to the runway. During a routine inspection on Tuesday an "irregularity, like a stress fracture" was found. Engineers have repaired the surface and flights have resumed "subject to delays and cancellations", the airport said. Rumours had been circulating on social media it was due to a hole on the runway. But an airport spokesman said "there is no truth in the rumour". The spokesman said: "The runway is concrete and used by aircraft day in day out. It's like a stress fracture and it needs to be smoothed out and we needed to perform some maintenance." MTV Australia presenter and model Kate Peck tweeted: "All flights cancelled out of London City airport. Ugh what a fail! Looks likes I'm never making it to Paris to turn into a croissant. Shame" Joe Perkins tweeted: "Up at 4:45am to queue in an immigration line and sit on a flight that didn't go anywhere #tuesday #nailedit @LondonCityAir" "We apologise to all the passengers caught up in it," the airport spokesman said. Passengers have been advised to speak with their airline before travelling to the airport. |
