Off-duty military police officer apprehends armed thief with bear hug in botched supermarket robbery

A policeman in Italy showed there is no such thing as being off-duty, when he apprehended an armed man as he tried to rob a supermarket outside of Rome.

CCTV released by Rome police shows the criminal demand money after pulling out a gun on shoppers and cashiers in a store 20 miles outside of the Italian capital.

Within seconds though, one of the shoppers can be seen sneaking up behind the gunman. Watch what happened next in the video below:

It later turned out that the shopper was a member of Italy's military Carabinieri and had been doing his weekly shop when the incident occurred.

The hapless thief managed to escape in a getaway car.

Police have said that they are still searching for the unidentified man and have so far had no leads.
