Delhi Daredevils v Sunrisers Hyderabad: IPL 2015 – as it happened
http://www.theguardian.com/sport/live/2015/may/09/delhi-daredevils-v-sunrisers-hyderabad-ipl-live Version 0 of 1. 7.07pm BST19:07 Well, that certainly sparked into life. A pretty boring match for the most part, it gave us a pretty exciting ending. Which, I guess, makes it the latest Pink Floyd album or something. The Daredevils are out, the Sunrisers keep their playoff hopes alive for another day. Thanks for reading. Bye! 6.59pm BST18:59 Sunrisers win by six runs 20 overs: Daredevils 157-4 (Jadhav 63, S Tiwary 26) 7 to win Yorker, smashed back to the bowler and there’s no run. Excellent ball to finish. 6.58pm BST18:58 19.5 overs: Daredevils 157-4 (Jadhav 63, S Tiwary 26) 7 to win Tiwary goes hard but can only pick out deep midwicket. Six to take it to a super over. 6.57pm BST18:57 19.4 overs: Daredevils 156-4 (Jadhav 63, S Tiwary 25) 8 to win Dropped! On leg stump, Jadhav swings it round the corner and Kumar dives to his right at short fine leg. He drops it, but saves three runs from a bad ball. 6.56pm BST18:56 19.3 overs: Daredevils 155-4 (Jadhav 62, S Tiwary 25) 9 to win A good bumper, into the body and Jadhav doesn’t get hold of the pull. It’s in the air but safe and they get two to midwicket. 6.55pm BST18:55 19.2 overs: Daredevils 153-4 (Jadhav 60, S Tiwary 25) 11 to win Hit hard to the man at mid on and they go through for one. 6.54pm BST18:54 19.1 overs: Daredevils 152-4 (Jadhav 60, S Tiwary 24) 12 to win Ishant with the last over and it’s a yorker, which Tiwary drives brilliantly back past the bowler for a dead straight four! 6.52pm BST18:52 19th over: Daredevils 148-4 (Jadhav 60, S Tiwary 20) target 164 It’s Bhuvi now with his final over. Jadhav clubs the first one back over his head and Warner comes around to collect the ball and send it back in in one fluid movement to keep them to a single. Well fielded. Well fielded by Ojha too as he flings himself to his right to save three, Tiwary taking a leg-bye. Jadhav digs out a fine yorker for one more. Another yorker, clipped square off the ankles by Tiwary and again it’s just a single. Brilliant death bowling this. A low full toss next, but it hits the bat high up and once again Jadhav just gets the one. Then a ridiculous decision as Tiwary looks to play the Dilscoop and is struck plumb in front of leg stump by a full toss. The umpire, who can only have thought it flicked the toe end of the bat, then gives leg byes. Great over from Kumar. 16 needed from the last. 6.46pm BST18:46 18th over: Daredevils 142-4 (Jadhav 57, S Tiwary 19) target 164 29 needed – surely Praveen Kumar won’t get another over? Nope, it’s Ishant and his first ball is short and top edged straight over the keeper’s head for four. A single to mid on brings Tiwary on strike and Ishant beats his attempted hoik with a good lifter. A good yorker is dug out and Tiwary comes halfway down the pitch, but Ishant’s throw at the stumps doesn’t hit. The batsman was dead in the water had he done so. A single to cover, then Jadhav edges the last one of the over down to third man. A good over, concedes just seven. 22 needed. 6.39pm BST18:39 17th over: Daredevils 135-4 (Jadhav 51, S Tiwary 18) target 164 Well, that didn’t go to plan, did it David? Warner turns to his other – let’s face it, better – Kumar: Bhuvi. He begins with a pair of dots to Jadhav, but then, when he sends down a very wide yorker, the batsman reads it perfectly and runs it off the face of the bat to third man for four. Excellent cricket all round there. A swing and a miss, then Jadhav cracks the fifth ball hard, over backward point and away for four to bring up his first IPL 50 since the one he made on debut. Nine from the over. 6.34pm BST18:34 16th over: Daredevils 126-4 (Jadhav 42, S Tiwary 18) target 164 Back to seam with Praveen Kumar: Jadhav backs away to his first ball and lifts a huge, powerful drive high over cover for six. Shot. The next isn’t bad either, cracking a full toss back past the bowler for four. Oh dear, a huge full toss on leg stump next and Jadhav launches it over midwicket for six more! Down the track comes Jadhav next and he fetches a short one from outside off to deep mid on; just a single though. He tries the slower ball to the left handed Tiwary and sends a big wide down leg, before the batsman clips to mid on for two more. Last ball is driven inches over the leaping Warner at extra cover and they get two more. 22 from the over. 6.27pm BST18:27 15th over: Daredevils 104-4 (Jadhav 25, S Tiwary 14) target 164 This is Tiwary’s fifth match this season, his fourth innings and he hasn’t been out yet. Henriques is the returning bowler and, after taking a couple of runs off the first ball, Jadhav smacks a pull off the front foot square for four. A pulled single gives Tiwary the strike for the final ball and he can only pick out the fielder. Seven off the over. 6.22pm BST18:22 14th over: Daredevils 97-4 (Jadhav 18, S Tiwary 14) target 164 It’s time for Ravi to have a bowl. Jadhav plays a remarkable shot from his first ball, drawing the bat into his body and opening the face to run it down to fine third man off the line of middle and off stump. Four runs and fully deserved. Short and wide next, the batsman goes back and cuts it hard in front of square for four. Then a third boundary, slogged off a length to long on! Jadhav knocks the 13th run of the over out to point, then Tiwary gets the 14th and 15th with a shovel to mid on. 6.17pm BST18:17 13th over: Daredevils 82-4 (Jadhav 5, S Tiwary 12) target 164 Jadhav goes for the sweep of Karn Sharma and top edges short of deep square leg. Before this over, Karn had 2-3 from his first couple of overs, which shows you just how much the batsmen have struggled against the spinners. Another appeal for LBW but the umpire is unmoved on account of there being an inside edge. Tiwary, presumably bored with this, dances forward and slogs a huge, 94m six over wide long on. 6.14pm BST18:14 12th over: Daredevils 73-4 (Jadhav 3, S Tiwary 5) target 164 Wuh, what the? Ah! A boundary! Tiwary getting off the mark with a decent smack off Rasool, through mid off for four. There are three other runs from the over, all in singles, as the Daredevils slip further behind the required rate. Remember, there’s no Angelo Mathews to come. 6.11pm BST18:11 11th over: Daredevils 66-4 (Jadhav 1, S Tiwary 0) target 164 Jadhav cuts for a single, before Duminy joins the procession. Saurabh Tiwary replaces him and can’t get a run. The last ball struck him on the pad and brought about an appeal from the bowler, but he was a long way down and it might have been turning down leg. 11 an over needed now. 6.07pm BST18:07 Wicket! Duminy b K Sharman 12 Some confusion over whether this was bowled or Ojha whipped the bails off. The replay quickly clears that one up, the ball turning past his outside edge and brushing off stump. 6.05pm BST18:05 10th over: Daredevils 65-3 (Jadhav 0, Duminy 12) target 164 That was a very good innings by de Kock, but the Daredevils probably weren’t as far enough ahead of the run as they had to be before the spinners got stuck into this. Yuvraj fails yet again, falling to the last ball of an over that costs just three. 6.04pm BST18:04 Wicket! Yuvraj c Warner b Rasool 2 Chipped straight down the throat of long on. Yuvraj is rubbish. 6.01pm BST18:01 9th over: Daredevils 62-2 (Yuvraj 1, Duminy 10) target 164 Karn Sharma into the attack and he breaks the South African partnership without another run being added. Yuvi comes to the crease and how the Daredevils could use an innings from him. 6.00pm BST18:00 Wicket! de Kock st Ohja b K Sharma 50 De Kock comes down the track and has a big mow, but misses the ball and can’t get his bat back down in time. 5.58pm BST17:58 8th over: Daredevils 60-1 (de Kock 50, Duminy 9) target 164 Er, the Sunrisers could do with a wicket here, really. Rasool is back into the attack. He’s finding a bit of turn off this pitch, but it’s so slow. Four singles from the first four balls, the fourth of which is cut away by de Kock to bring up his 50, in his first appearance of the season. Very well played. 5.51pm BST17:51 7th over: Daredevils 56-1 (de Kock 48, Duminy 7) target 164 Some dibbly dobblers might not be a bad idea on this pitch, so Henriques comes on. He’s bowling very full and straight, which is a good tactic to de Kock especially as it denies him runs in his strongest areas square of the... Henriques drops short with his final ball and de Kock smacks it through midwicket for four more. D’oh! 5.47pm BST17:47 6th over: Daredevils 49-1 (de Kock 43, Duminy 5) target 164 Ishant Sharma returns. Duminy looks to muscle him away first up but another mistimed pull means it’s just a single. Short again, to de Kock this time, and he nails his pull to the midwicket fence. He’s looking in decent nick now. That said, Sharma comes back well, following the batsman as he backs away and sending down a couple of dots. Another four, but there was nothing the bowler could do as it was cut to Bopara at point, bounced in front of him and span away over the fielder’s shoulder. That’s poor fielding and the last ball is poor bowling: short on leg stump and hooked up, high over fine leg for six. 5.42pm BST17:42 5th over: Daredevils 34-1 (de Kock 29, Duminy 4) target 164 One Kumar for another, with Praveen replacing Bhuvneshwar. Short to de Kock and it’s pulled, unconvincingly, over backward square leg for four. That was very much a hit-and-hope shot. Kumar comes round the wicket and this is a much better shot, a slow one, back of a length and pulled from waist height through midwicket for four more. Praveen adjusts a bit too much and floats up a juicy half volley, which de Kock smashes through extra cover to the fence. 5.38pm BST17:38 4th over: Daredevils 21-1 (de Kock 17, Duminy 4) target 164 The off spinner Rasool is on and de Kock completely fails to get hold of an attempted straight drive for six, hitting it very high and fractionally beyond the chasing Ishant. They get two for that, then a single brings Duminy on strike. He sweeps square for a couple more and finishes the over with a single. 5.35pm BST17:35 3rd over: Daredevils 15-1 (de Kock 14, Duminy 1) target 164 It’s Kumar again and he swings three nicely away from Iyer, drawing a play and miss each time. The pressure is on and it’s yet another early wicket for the Daredevils. That ball just game right off the top of the bat. Duminy gets one to fine leg first ball to get underway. They scramble a sharp single off the last ball, though a direct hit from the fielder at the non-striker’s end would have seen de Kock on the good ship do one. 5.32pm BST17:32 Wicket! Iyer c & b B Kumar 0 Iyer goes for a seven-ball duck, thrashing at one outside off and just knocking the ball straight up in the air. Kumar takes the easy catch in his follow through. 5.29pm BST17:29 2nd over: Daredevils 13-0 (de Kock 13, Iyer 0) target 164 This is always entertaining: Ishant Sharma from the other end. He’s too wide to de Kock and gets cut nicely, with expert timing, through backward point for four. The bowler comes back well though, finding that slightly straighter line and getting a couple to leave the batsman outside off stump. There’s good carry here for the bowler, so it’s not an awful pitch. Swish and a miss for de Kock next. From the fifth ball the batsman drives up and over extra cover and the ball trickles slowly to the fence. 5.24pm BST17:24 1st over: Daredevils 5-0 (de Kock 5, Iyer 0) target 164 There’s a new opener at the top of the order for Delhi, Quinton de Kock, who had a pretty woeful World Cup for South Africa earlier this year. Bhuvi Kumar has the new ball and his second ball is cracked through point by the left hander de Kock for four. Too wide outside off that. Straighter next but it’s dropped into the off side for one. 5.16pm BST17:16 Only once has a total of 150+ been chased at this ground. The Sunrisers should have enough. 5.06pm BST17:06 End of innings 20th over: Sunrisers 163-4 (Henriques 74, Bopara 17) Zaheer with the final over. Bopara mishits, up in the aire but short of square leg first up, and they take a single, before Henriques picks the slower ball and hits six down the ground. This has been a fantastic finish for the Sunrisers. Two more next ball and they complete the innings with just a pair of singles. 5.01pm BST17:01 19th over: Sunrisers 152-4 (Henriques 65, Bopara 15) Morkel again and Bopara gives him the charge turning a length ball into a half volley and middling it back past the bowler for an excellent four. Turned to fine leg next for a really well run single; they’ve picked up so many twos here that both actually have a decent strike rate. A short ball, mistimed by Henriques but it lands safely at square leg. Bopara takes a single, then Morkel drops short again to Henriques and gets pulled over the rope at square leg. Then another six, over midwicket! That’s a cracking over. STATBYTE: Moises Henriques scores his first IPL fifty, after six seasons, with four different franchises. 4.57pm BST16:57 18th over: Sunrisers 131-4 (Henriques 51, Bopara 8) Probably time to kick on now. Surely they’ll need 150? JP Duminy is practically daring the batsmen here, by turning to his own part-time off-spin. The batsmen are happy to just knock it straight for the first five balls, picking up the odd run or two each time, before Henriques brings up his half century from 39 balls with a clump through mid on for a couple. 4.53pm BST16:53 17th over: Sunrisers 122-4 (Henriques 44, Bopara 7) It’s difficult to know what a good total here is, as the difficulty of scoring is pretty uncharacteristic of the IPL. You feel they’ll need a couple more overs like the last one anyway. Morkel back into the attack now. A handful of ones, a couple of twos and that’s your lot. There have been better overs, I’ll admit. Wonder if it will prove costly to bowl out Nathan Coulter-Nile before the death? Albie Morkel often hittable in the final overs. #IPL 4.47pm BST16:47 16th over: Sunrisers 114-4 (Henriques 40, Bopara 3) Bopara is “unleashed” according tio the commentators. He has potential, they reckon of the 30 year old with 120 ODIs under his belt. Henriques smacks a non-turning length ball from Mishra over mid on; he’s hit a couple of sixes now and you feel like he’s throwing every ounce of effort to into every shot, just getting it to the boundary through sheer force of will. A knock to deep midwicket for two next ball, then excellent running for another pair off the last ball. 4.43pm BST16:43 15th over: Sunrisers 99-4 (Henriques 28, Bopara 0) Henriques wakes up, picking a shorter one from Coulter-Nile and hitting off the bottom of the bat, flat over midwicket for four. He tries again second ball but it’s hit too high on the bat and just loops into no man’s land at mid on. A run there, anyway. A couple more singles each, then the wicket falls to the last ball. 4.42pm BST16:42 Wicket! K Sharma c Yadav b Coulter-Nile 16 A big wild slog, totally out of control – I’m not sure he even had a destination in mind for that shot – and Yadav runs in to cover to take the high catch. 4.36pm BST16:36 14th over: Sunrisers 92-3 (Henriques 22, K Sharma 15) A new bowler, Albie Morkel. Sharma – whose score I’m unsure of thanks to some confusion between the TV and Cricinfo, punches off the back foot for two then hoiks a messy one to midwicket for a single; in the air that one, but nowhere near a fielder. Six from the over. This is almost as boring as Oasis’s first album. 4.31pm BST16:31 13th over: Sunrisers 86-3 (Henriques 19, K Sharma 13) Coulter-Nile comes back and the first ball brings the deftest boundary you’ll see, feathered off the top edge, up near the handle, about six inches wide of the diving keeper de Kock and down to the fine third man fence by Karn Sharma. Threee more singles from the over, all of them behind square on the off side. 4.25pm BST16:25 12th over: Sunrisers 79-3 (Henriques 18, K Sharma 7) Mishra again. Sharma shovels a round the corner for two, then deflects one even finer next ball for four to long leg. Mishra’s line was all wrong there. A full toss smashed away through cover by Henriques, but the outfield has as much life in it as Nick Clegg’s career. Two runs, then six! On a full length, on middle and it’s heaved hard over mid on by Henriques. 4.22pm BST16:22 11th over: Sunrisers 64-3 (Henriques 10, K Sharma 0) Yadav agin. I guess it’s important for these two to stick around for a little while so that they have wickets in hand when they dod eventually go for... sorry, Eoin. In fact maybe I was wrong, as the big-hitting Karn Sharma comes in ahead of Bopara and Rasool. 4.21pm BST16:21 Wicket! Morgan c Coulter-Nile b Yadav 22 Morgan comes down the wicket, gets to the pitch of it and lifts it straight to mid off. Coulter-Nile tumbles forward and takes good catch. 4.17pm BST16:17 10th over: Sunrisers 62-2 (Henriques 9, Morgan 21) More spin, leg from Mishra this time. If T20 is cricket’s version of 80s synth pop – that is to say, stupid, cheesy, glitzy guilty pleasures, the best of which is still brilliant though – then this is very much a Haircut 100 record. Five singles. 4.11pm BST16:11 9th over: Sunrisers 57-2 (Henriques 7, Morgan 18) Morgan backs away a long way to leg and hits a hard cut over point, but he doesn’t time it. Don’t expect this to be a high scoring match. Henriques then gets a couple with a chop down to third man. I’ll be honest, that wasn’t the most interesting over. 4.08pm BST16:08 8th over: Sunrisers 54-2 (Henriques 5, Morgan 17) Spin looks like a good option here. Well, I guess it does everywhere in this competition. Duminy brings himself on and, after a pair of singles, Morgan nails a reverse sweep from outside leg stump and over backward point for four. The bowler comes back well, firing in two dots, before Morgan gets a single from the last. 4.05pm BST16:05 7th over: Sunrisers 47-2 (Henriques 4, Morgan 11) With the fielding restrictions lifted, Jayant Yadav returns. The pitch looks a bit tacky and the ball’s definitely holding up. Turning too, albeit, as the TV man points out, slowly. Three singles, then Morgan turns one round the corner for two. One more from the final ball and that’s a decent over from the off spinner. 4.02pm BST16:02 6th over: Sunrisers 41-2 (Henriques 2, Morgan 7) Zaheer is into his third straight over, with 1-13 from his first two. He’s not been at his best, and there’s another wide in here as he’s struggled to get his line perfect. Four singles too from the over then, as if to illustrate the point, he strays on to Morgan’s hip and gets shovelled over square leg for four more. 3.57pm BST15:57 5th over: Sunrisers 32-2 (Henriques 0, Morgan 1) Well this is inauspicious from the Sunrisers. They’ll have to hope now that Morgan’s impressive showing last time around wasn’t a false dawn. He’s a lucky boy here as he leaves one angled in from round the wicket and watches it fly not many inches over his off stump. Just a single from the last ball for Morgan off the over. 3.52pm BST15:52 Wicket! Warner c S Tiwary b Coulter-Nile 17 Warner goes! He’s tempted into going after a short on, doesn’t get the necessary elevation on his pull from outside off, and plonks it into the hands of short midwicket! Updated at 3.54pm BST 3.51pm BST15:51 4th over: Sunrisers 31-1 (Henriques 0, Warner 17) Filth from Zaheer, bowling left arm, over the wicket to the left handers and Dhawan can just shovel it round the corner for four. As if to prove my point, he straightens his line a touch and concedes no more runs before making the breakthrough. Of course as soon as I say that he sends a wide down the leg side to Warner, who then nudges the last ball of the over to mid-on for one. 3.48pm BST15:48 Wicket! Dhawan c A Morkel b Zaheer 13 A shorter ball, sticks in the wicket a bit and Dhawan chips a leading edge to mid on. 3.45pm BST15:45 3rd over: Sunrisers 25-0 (Dhawan 9, Warner 16) The experiment with spin is done and dusted, it seems, with Coulter-Nile coming into the attack. His sometime international team mate Davey Warner is on strike. After a couple of dots, Warner top edges a bouncer with a wild, out of control hook, and it flies over fine leg and into the stand. A bottom edge goes through to the keeper and they dash for a cheeky single, before Dhawan chips unconvincingly in the air and just wide of mid off for three. Might be a slow outfield, this one. Also Peter Moores has officially been sacked. Again. 3.40pm BST15:40 2nd over: Sunrisers 15-0 (Dhawan 6, Warner 9) It’s seam from the other end, Zaheer Khan sharing the new ball. There is a green tinge to the pitch. He’s getting good carry here and Warner is getting nowt out of him, playing and missing at the third ball of the over. The fourth is short and wide though and Warner cuts nicely through point for three. Just not quite timed enough to get it to the boundary. Dhawan is on strike and Zaheer strays across the left-hander, on to leg stump, and it’s eased over fine leg for four, the ball bouncing just inside the rope. 3.33pm BST15:33 1st over: Sunrisers 8-0 (Dhawan 2, Warner 6) Jayant Yadav, the off-spinner is opening the bowling. Not a bad move, given that these two batsmen like pace on the ball, but then again they have left out Tahir. Dhawan is off the mark first ball with a single, as is Warner. Another single to Dhawan, then Warner gets a thick edge off a good off break, wide of slip and down to third man for four. One more to mid off makes eight off the over. 3.29pm BST15:29 Here we go, Dhawan and Warner to open. Imran Tahir dropped for the Daredevils in favour of the paceman, Coluter-Nile. 3.21pm BST15:21 Toss and teams Sunrisers win the toss. Warner says they will bat first. Delhi Daredevils: SS Iyer, Q de Kock, JP Duminy*, Yuvraj Singh, KM Jadhav†, SS Tiwary, JA Morkel, J Yadav, NM Coulter-Nile, A Mishra, Z Khan Sunrisers Hyderabad: DA Warner*, S Dhawan, NV Ojha†, MC Henriques, EJG Morgan, RS Bopara, Parvez Rasool, KV Sharma, P Kumar,B Kumar, I Sharma 3.00pm BST15:00 Preamble Afternoon folks. This may be a near-bottom clash, with second-to-last playing third-to-last, but the latter have reason to be cheerful. The Sunrisers have found form, at long last, and the signs are that Eoin Morgan has too. This is particularly useful, given that they were hitherto rather reliant on their opening pair of Dhawan and Warner. When Morgan fired last time around, his side got past 200 for the first time this season. Weirdly, the decision to drop Dale Steyn and Trent Boult, while bringing in Ravi Bopara, has also paid dividends. The Sunrisers are looking at the play-offs but the Daredevils probably aren’t. They need to win all three of their remaining matches, which they probably won’t, and even then might not make it. I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again: any team that spends in excess of $2m on Yuvraj Singh is asking for trouble. A quick turnaround from the first match of the day means that there’s not much time until this one gets underway. Toss and team news in a mo. Until then, here’s some scary music. |
