Natalie Portman has played rebels, ballerinas, the Queen of England and Luke Skywalker’s mother but now she looks set to take on her most intimidating role yet: “the Notorious RBG”. Deadline reported on Friday afternoon that Portman had signed on to play supreme court justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg in a biopic about the life of the octogenarian jurist.

The movie, entitled On the Basis of Sex, will focus on Ginsberg’s career, including her position leading the Women’s Rights Project, where she litigated landmark cases in front of the supreme court two decades before being appointed to it. In this role, Ginsburg played a crucial part in establishing that the equal protection clause of the 14th amendment applied to gender.

In recent years, Ginsburg, who was appointed to the supreme court by Bill Clinton in 1993, has become a feminist icon among many millennials and, as “the Notorious RBG”, has spawned a number of memes. She has written a number of influential dissenting opinions in recent years, including in the Hobby Lobby case. A major movie production about her is likely to only further cement this popular image of the supreme court justice.

Irin Carmon, a reporter at MSNBC and co-author of the forthcoming biography Notorious RBG: The Life and Times of Ruth Bader Ginsburg, told the Guardian: “I think it’s an incredibly rich topic for a movie. RBG both changed history and was changed by it, and more people should know that story. Natalie Portman is the perfect match – she brings smarts and integrity.”

Production for the movie is reportedly slated to start by the end of the year.
