Version 0 of 1.

The Labour leader, Ed Miliband, has said this election is a clash of values, not a clash of nations. But by that does he mean he is battling to save the UK from the dark side?

A new YouGov poll has shown that if the public are asked which Star Wars character they think party leaders would most like to be, the most popular answer for Miliband is hero Luke Skywalker, with 17% of those having an opinion making this choice.

For Miliband’s political adversary David Cameron the main choice was the villain Darth Vader – also on 17%.

Respondents were even more likely to think that the Ukip leader, Nigel Farage, would most want to be Darth Vader, with more than one in five saying so. Bickering droids C-3PO and R2-D2 were tied as the most popular choice for Nick Clegg.

David Cameron – Darth Vader

Only 3% of those intending to vote Conservative thought that the Sith lord Vader was who Cameron would want to be the most, compared with 28% among those who back Labour.

Conservative supporters were far more likely to pick Luke Skywalker’s mentor Obi-Wan Kenobi (26%) or Skywalker himself (24%) for their party leader.

Ed Miliband – Luke Skywalker

The “Cool Ed Miliband” meme has gone viral over the last couple of weeks, alongside the group of teenage supporters known as the #Milifandom.

This geek chic perhaps makes Miliband a more natural casting choice as Luke Skywalker.

However, the electorate hasn’t fully made up its mind when it comes to the Labour leader. Behind the most popular Skywalker answer were the rigid and anxious droid C-3PO (chosen by 12% of respondents) followed by Jabba the Hutt (11%).

It’s clear that a significant slice of Labour voters back the idea of the party leader being a hero: 30% of those with an opinion said Miliband wanted to be Skywalker, followed by 15% who thought he would like to be the swashbuckling Han Solo.

Nick Clegg – C-3PO/R2-D2

The Liberal Democrat leader perhaps gets the roughest ride here with C-3PO and bleepy droid R2-D2 tied as top choices on 13%. Adding those together, it means that one in four people think Clegg wants to be a character designed to serve the series’ main players.

Those intending to vote Liberal Democrat are most likely to see Clegg as Han Solo (17%) or Luke Skywalker (16%) but they are also slightly more likely to pick C-3PO (15%) than the general public.

Nigel Farage – Darth Vader

At 22%, Farage aspiring to be Darth Vader is the most agreed-upon character choice for any politician - even 16% of Ukip supporters agree with the selection.

In second place, with 19%, was Jabba the Hutt. Darth Vader, Luke Skywalker and Han Solo were all tied for the most popular choice among Ukip supporters at 16%.

Full list of characters voters were asked to choose from: Darth Vader, Jabba the Hutt, Chewbacca, Emperor Palpatine, Han Solo, Obi-Wan Kenobi, Luke Skywalker, Yoda, Wicket the Ewok, C-3PO, Boba Fett, R2-D2, Lando Calrissian, Princess Leia.
