I want to move from the public sector but am worried how employable I am
http://www.theguardian.com/money/2015/may/04/move-public-sector-worried-how-employable Version 0 of 1. Twice a week we publish problems that will feature in a forthcoming Dear Jeremy advice column in the Saturday Guardian so that readers can offer their own advice and suggestions. We then print the best of your comments alongside Jeremy’s own insights. Here is the latest dilemma – what are your thoughts? Since graduating with a business-related degree three years ago I have worked at a large public sector organisation. Lately I have become frustrated with the lack of opportunity to gain on-the-job experience and the absence of responsibility. I feel that staying with my employer will hamper my career progression. I want to work in an analytical role in the private sector. My current role is a mixture of administrative and analytical tasks, which involves working with commercial customers, and my degree was business-focused (knowledge and skills I haven’t used in my career so far). I am worried that employers will dismiss me due to my lack of commercial experience and will give preference to commercially experienced candidates and recent graduates. What can I do to improve my employability for the private sector? Do you need advice on a work issue? For Jeremy’s and readers’ help, send a brief email to dear.jeremy@theguardian.com.
