The authorities have arrested three opposition leaders and nearly 200 other people after clashes erupted between the police and protesters demanding the resignation of the president and the release from jail of his predecessor, an opposition lawmaker said Saturday. Nearly the entire opposition leadership behind the protests was detained, said the lawmaker, Eva Abdulla. Secretary of State John Kerry, speaking from Sri Lanka, said, “There are troubling signs that democracy is under threat in the Maldives.” Thousands of people marched in the capital on Friday, accusing President Yameen Abdul Gayoom of jailing his predecessor, Mohamed Nasheed, and others whom he sees as political threats. The police arrested 192 people. |
