Iraq: Canada Promises More Aid

Prime Minister Stephen Harper of Canada made a surprise visit to Iraq on Saturday and pledged continued support for the country’s battle against the Islamic State group. Mr. Harper’s visit to Baghdad and Iraq’s Kurdish region in the north came as seven women and children were killed by a roadside bomb and a suicide blast killed six Iraqi soldiers. Canada has offered $139 million more in aid to address the refugee crisis around the region caused by the fighting, in addition to the $67 million already committed to Iraq.
