Royal baby: Northern Ireland politicians send congratulations

Northern Ireland politicians have congratulated the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge on the birth of their second child - a daughter. DUP First Minister Peter Robinson sent "heartfelt wishes" to the couple on behalf of everyone in Northern Ireland. Deputy First Minister Martin McGuinness tweeted: "A new baby, always a joy. "Warmest congratulations and every happiness to all mothers and fathers on the births of all their babies born today," the Sinn Féin MLA added. 'Exciting time' The new princess - who is fourth in line to the throne - was born at 08:34 BST at St Mary's Hospital, London, weighing 8lbs 3oz (3.7kg). Ulster Unionist leader Mike Nesbitt sent his "warmest congratulations". "We are all delighted that both mother and baby are well, and our thoughts are joyful for the Cambridge family, the Queen and the broader Royal Family," Mr Nesbitt said. "The Duke and Duchess have proved to be exceptionally popular in this part of the United Kingdom and we look forward to welcoming them and their two children to Northern Ireland in the near future." SDLP leader Alasdair McDonnell congratulated the couple on the birth of their daughter and wished "them all health and happiness for the future". 'Wonderful occasion' In his statement, DUP leader Mr Robinson said: "The arrival of a new baby is a very exciting time for all parents and I extend my heartfelt wishes to them both on behalf of everyone in Northern Ireland. "I wish them both every happiness on this wonderful occasion." Writing on her Twitter account, Naomi Long from the Alliance Party said: "Congratulations on the safe delivery of the new baby girl." The Orange Order also welcomed the newest member of the Royal Family. Edward Stevenson, grand master of the Grand Orange Lodge of Ireland, said: "The Orange Institution is delighted by today's wonderful news and on behalf of the entire membership I wish to convey our warmest congratulations to the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge on the birth of a baby girl." The moderator of the Presbyterian Church, Rev Michael Barry, has offered his "heartfelt congratulations". |
