US markets higher but LinkedIn shares suffer

The Dow Jones rose 1% to 18,024 points, while the S&P 500 added 1.1% to 2,108 points. The technology-focused Nasdaq index gained 1.3% to 5,005 points. LinkedIn was the big faller, sinking 18.6% to $205.21 after losses widened for the first quarter and the company cut revenue projections for the second quarter. Western Union shares ended up 4.8% to $21.25 as investors responded positively to higher-than-expected first-quarter profits. Among other winners, Expedia closed up 7.9% at $101.69 after also reporting first-quarter profits that exceeded analysts' expectations. The travel website made more money from bookings despite the rise the US dollar. Shares in Voltari, a mobile advertising company backed by activist investor Carl Icahn, had been up more than 12% but ended down 2% at $10.45. The stock has soared more than 300% since Mr Icahn declared a substantial stake in the company in April. Meanwhile, Accuray fell more than 16% to $6.82 after the cancer radiation device maker reported lower-than-expected revenue for its third quarter. |
