The killer of a children's TV actor who showed "no remorse" over the fatal stabbing outside a London nightclub has been jailed for life. Jeffrey Okafor, 24, fled to Nigeria to avoid justice after killing Carl Beatson Asiedu in Vauxhall, Woolwich Crown Court heard in August 2009 . Okafor, of East Dulwich, must serve a minimum of 17 years and 146 days. Judge Christopher Kinch QC said his decision to flee the UK had drawn out the ordeal for the victim's family. Okafor killed Mr Beatson Asiedu - who appeared in CBBC's series MI High - when a late-night row escalated into violence, the court heard. Mr Beatson Asiedu had earlier performed a set at Club Life nightclub, close to Vauxhall station, and was attacked as he left the venue. Sentencing Okafor, Judge Kinch described the attack as "entirely unprovoked and unnecessary". "It demonstrates a complete absence of remorse and an overwhelming interest in self-preservation," he said. The court heard Okafor had confessed to his girlfriend before fleeing to Nigeria using his brother's passport. A post-mortem examination concluded the cause of Mr Beatson Asiedu's death was a single stab wound to the front of the chest. Okafor was extradited to the UK from Nigeria in November. Det Insp Alison Hepworth, of the Metropolitan Police, said: "The sentence should serve as a warning to those who attempt to evade justice. "No matter the length of time or distance we will do all we can, using all means available to us, to find you." |
