Hugh Muir (Hideously diverse Britain: mixed-heritage Brits and the dangers of casual racism, G2, 27 April) points to the expanding numbers of mixed heritage people in the UK.

Members of People in Harmony, (www.pih.org.uk), an organisation that has existed since 1972 to support mixed relationships and mixed race people, are acutely aware of the ways in which assumptions are made about people’s ethnicity and identity.

In cases where identities are imposed that are not appropriate, feelings of poor self-worth develop which are hard to cope with.

There is very little publicity or policy recognition of these issues, so it was good to read this column.Susann SavidgeChair, People in Harmony
