The US may have been spared another shooting tragedy after it was reported that a teacher had apprehended a shooter who entered a school in Washington state.

Local media said that emergency response staff said they had received reports of a shooting at North Thurston High School in the town of Lacey. The reports were first made at 7:30 am local time on Monday morning.

Reports said that the gunman had been tackled by Brady Olson, a member of staff who teaches governments and civics.

A student who answered the phone in Mr Olson's office on Monday morning told The Independent: "Apparently someone entered the school with a .357, fired one or two shots into the air. Then Mr Olson apprehended him."

The North Thurston News Service said that the shooter had been apprehended by a member of staff and that nobody was hurt. School will be dismissed after police finish sweeping school, the service said.

An unidentified student spoke with Q13 FOX News reporter Tom Yazwinski and said that when she arrived at school, she saw people running out. People screamed “shooting”, and the girl drove off, the student said.
