Scottish independence feels “inevitable”, Rupert Murdoch has said, as another poll shows the SNP set to sweep the vast majority of Scottish seats at the general election.

The media mogul, who owns The Sun newspaper, the Times newspaper, and Sky TV said the issue was a matter of “self determination” for the Scottish people.

“Scots may be crazy or not wanting self rule, but who can deny right of self determination? Feels inevitable over next few years,” he tweeted yesterday.

A poll over the weekend however showed that most Scots still favour their country staying part of the UK, however.

The Panelbase poll released yesterday asked respondents whether Scotland should become independent.

51% of people in the poll’s sample said no, Scotland should remain a part of the UK, while 49% said yes, Scotland should become independent.

Mr Murdoch’s papers have taken different stances on the SNP in Scotland and the rest of the UK.

The Sun newspaper has heavily criticised Ms Sturgeon in recent months while the Scottish Sun runs more positive pieces about the Scottish First Minister.

The SNP are set to sweep Scotland’s seats at next week’s general election, however.

Scottish Labour could be left with just one Member of Parliament if the new poll showing the party slumping to just 22% of the vote was replicated at an election.

The survey by TNS found Nicola Sturgeon’s SNP on 54% – a figure higher than any recorded for the party – with Labour hitting a new low in its former heartland.
