A locum doctor could be banned from practising after having sex with a female patient in a consulting room.

The General Medical Council (GMC) heard that the 34-year-old woman asked Dr Michael Moore to examine her chest before she pulled up her top.

The pair later had sex. Dr Moore, 64, was arrested on rape charges three days later which were dropped when the complaint was retracted by Patient A.

Dr Moore admitted misconduct. The panel is now considering what action to take.

The GMC panel determined that Dr Moore's fitness to practise was impaired by reason of his misconduct. Their decision on action was expected on Tuesday.

The retired doctor, who trained at the University of Liverpool, was working as a locum at the Lower Broughton Medical Centre in Salford, Greater Manchester, and saw the woman for a hip problem in March 2006.

'Sexually charged'

GMC counsel Bernadette Baxter said Dr Moore's conversation with Patient A became "flirtatious and sexually charged" when he indicated he would need to undertake a physical examination.

She said the doctor, who is married and has moved abroad, was surprised when Patient A confided that she had dreamed about him after seeing him earlier that month.

Ms Baxter said Dr Moore, who was not present at the hearing, was "flattered" and that the woman's attention "boosted his confidence".

He claimed that the woman used her legs to grip his thighs during the examination.

Ms Baxter read from Dr Moore's statement which said: "I've got to say it did excite me and I thought, 'blimey, she's a flirty piece this one'."

They began kissing before having sex on the couch in the consultation room, the hearing was told.

Ms Baxter added: "The doctor was in something of a state of shock as to what had taken place. He began to feel guilty because he was in a long-term relationship."
