David Petraeus, the most esteemed general from US wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, has been sentenced to two years’ probation and fined $100,000 for leaking classified materials to his biographer and mistress, Paula Broadwell.

The general pleaded guilty in a Charlotte, North Carolina federal court and his sentence was similar to what the government recommended, though the fine was $60,000 more.

The sentence was without prison time, which upset many in the US government, who said that Attorney General Eric Holder was being lenient on General Petraeus, the New York Times reported. The general’s attorneys had said that he would not agree to a plea deal that included prison time.

“I want to apologize for the pain my actions caused,” General Petraeus said, the Charlotte Observer reported.

“He was entrusted with the nation’s most sensitive security,” US Attorney Jill Westmoreland said. “The defendant betrayed that trust.”

In the summer of 2012, federal agents searched Ms Broadwell’s Charlotte home and found she was in possession of classified materials given to her by the general, including secret codes, identities of covert officers and war strategies.

General Petraeus initially lied to investigators about sharing classified information. Officials say that none of the classified materials appeared in Ms Broadwell’s book.
