John Webster was not only a commanding presence in the biology department at Exeter in the 1980s, but also capable of great empathy and warmth. When I drew his attention to a Liberty Cap magic mushroom in the course of his “fungus foray” for new undergraduates on the first weekend of term, he informed me that there was “Nothing really of interest to us there, Simon,” with a twinkle in his eye.
