Paramedic Philip Garrod struck off after bogus 105mph story

A paramedic who claimed he was going to help an injured cyclist when he was caught riding his motorbike at 105mph has been struck off.

Philip Garrod, 43, of Machynlleth, Powys, filled in a patient clinical record to back up his bogus story.

But the Welsh Ambulance Trust found no record of a 999 call to the A470 in Dolgellau, Gwynedd, on 25 April 2011.

Garrod was struck off by the Health and Care Professions Council after misconduct was proved.

The hearing in Cardiff was told Garrod, a paramedic for 10 years, was caught by a speed camera on the A470 where the limit is 60mph.

He pleaded guilty to speeding at Dolgellau Magistrates Court' and was fined £650 and given six penalty points on his licence.

Garrod faced a Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC) disciplinary hearing over his fabricated story about an injured cyclist to avoid paying the fine.

The father-of-two did not attend the hearing but denied five allegations relating to providing false statements, creating a false patient clinic record and dishonesty.

He said in writing he "confused the dates".

But the panel rejected this and struck him off describing his behaviour as "pre-meditated" and "dishonest".

Panel chairman Stephen Fash said Garrod's conduct fell "well below the standards expected of a registered health professional".
