'Shooting' at Gaza-Egypt border One dead in Gaza-Egypt shooting
(about 1 hour later)
Gunfire has erupted at the Gaza-Egypt border following clashes between Egyptian border guards and Palestinian youths, witnesses say. Gunfire has erupted at the Gaza-Egypt border, after clashes between Egyptian border guards and Palestinians.
The source of the shooting is unclear, but a number of people are reported to have been injured. Casualties have been reported on both sides, and at least one Palestinian is said to have been killed.
Unconfirmed reports say Palestinian gunmen and Egyptian forces have exchanged fire at the Rafah crossing. The shooting broke out at the Rafah crossing, one day after the Egyptians re-sealed it.
The violence comes a day after Cairo closed the frontier, breached by Palestinian militants last month. Palestinian militants blasted holes in the border fence last month. Tens of thousands of people have since poured across from the blockaded Gaza Strip.
The clashes that occurred ahead of the gunfire saw youths throw stones at an Egyptian command post in the area. Egyptian forces responded with tear gas. Egypt closed the last gap in the fence on Sunday, with thousands of people still on the wrong side.
Live fire
As anger grew during the day on Monday, youths threw stones at an Egyptian command post in the area. Egyptian forces responded with tear gas, and then with live fire.
Palestinian gunmen returned the fire, but it is not clear if the gunmen were from Hamas, which runs the Gaza Strip.
As well as the dead man, the Palestinians say at least four people were wounded and a number treated for the effects of tear-gas.
Reports from the Egyptian side say at least two policemen were wounded.
