Arjen Robben has said that he intends to continue to see the renowned doctor Hans-Wilhelm Müller-Wohlfahrt despite his surprise departure from Bayern Munich last week. Müller-Wohlfahrt and three other members of the medical team quit the club last week saying they had been blamed by the coach Pep Guardiola for the Champions League quarter-final first-leg defeat against Porto. Robben did not feature in Tuesday’s second leg, in which Bayern booked their place in the semi-finals with a 6-1 victory, because of a stomach muscle tear he sustained in the shock 2-0 defeat to Borussia Mönchengladbach last month. He had been ruled out for up to two months but, according to reports in Germany, was close to being named on the bench by Guardiola at the Allianz Arena. However, when asked by German TV station ZDF whether he would continue to be treated by Müller-Wohlfahrt, Robben said: “Of course, my relationship with him is great. “Every player has a personal relationship with him, he is a person of trust. He’s the best doctor I have ever worked with and he will continue to treat me. I trust him 100%.” Guardiola denied last week that he had fallen out with Müller-Wohlfahrt, who has treated a number of high-profile athletes away from football in the past including Usain Bolt and Paula Radcliffe. But Bayern’s chairman Karl-Heinz Rummenigge refused to reveal the details of a telephone conversation he held with the 72-year-old on Monday night. “There is medical secrecy – and there are dressing-room secrets,” he said. “I was on the phone with Müller-Wohlfahrt yesterday. It was a good conversation. He is a prominent personality and is always an important part of the Bayern family. But he has made his decision.” |
