Rupert Murdoch ordered The Sun to step up attacks on Labour because he is “worried” that the party will win the election, Ed Miliband has said.

The Labour leader said he was not “surprised” by the revelations in The Independent that Mr Murdoch berated journalists on his tabloid papers for not doing enough to stop Labour from winning the general election. Mr Murdoch is also said to have warned that the company’s future depended on Ed Miliband not entering No 10.

“It doesn’t surprise me. They have been at it for a long time,” Mr Miliband told The Independent. He added: “I think they are worried.”

Privately some Labour MPs said yesterday that they are now being “ridiculously careful” what they say in public to avoid being “misquoted” by right-wing newspapers such as The Sun.

Labour has stopped circulating advance notice of Mr Miliband’s visits and statements to The Sun because it suspects they are being passed on to the Conservatives. A spokesman for The Sun said: “If Ed Miliband wants to ignore the concerns of Sun readers we feel it is our responsibility to reflect that decision.”
