A man who was hit by a tube train while apparently bending down to pick up a bag died in hospital three days later, police have said. John Burgess, 27, from Dulwich in south London, was struck by a Northern line train at Stockwell station during rush hour on 10 April.

He suffered serious injuries and died in hospital three days later, according to British Transport police.

The BTP said: “Officers are currently preparing a report for the coroner and the incident is not being treated as suspicious. An inquest was opened and adjourned on Thursday 16 April”

Transport for London said the platform was not overcrowded at the time of the incident.

Many commuters witnessed the accident, which occurred at around 9am.

Chris Duncan tweeted at the time: “Was on this train. Awful. Man hit in the head by oncoming Tube train in horrific accident.”

Isabelle Zonderland told London’s Evening Standard: “I was on the tube when it happened. He got hit only metres from our carriage.

“When we were let off the tube I saw him lying there. Someone who I believe was on the platform was checking for a pulse. His face was covered in blood.”

Raj Lucas said: “I was about midway on the platform and the tube was pulling in and suddenly I heard screams from the start of the platform.

“The people closer to the incident (who saw it) were visibly very distressed.”

Pat Hansberry, London Underground’s operations director for the Northern line, said: “Our thoughts are with the family and friends of John Burgess and we will continue to work with the Office of Rail Regulation and the British Transport Police to establish exactly what happened.”
