Tickets for Sir Bradley Wiggins’ hour record attempt went on sale on Friday and had gone in seven minutes.

The 34-year-old four-times Olympic champion and 2012 Tour de France winner will attempt to cycle as far as he can in 60 minutes at the Lee Valley VeloPark, formerly known as the Olympic Velodrome, on 7 June.

The tickets went on sale at 10am priced between £29 and £49 for the 6,000-capacity arena and were swiftly snapped up, leaving thousands disappointed.

The Lee Valley VeloPark manager Jeremy Northrop said: “We haven’t seen tickets sell out so fast since London 2012.

“Everyone remembers the magic of that year, and this idea of seeing Sir Bradley go flat out for an hour is something that really captured the public’s imagination.”

The Briton finished his Team Sky career at Paris-Roubaix last Sunday and will ride in next month’s inaugural Tour de Yorkshire for his eponymous team before preparing for the Hour, which will be shown live on Sky Sports, as part of his return to the track.

The world time-trial champion is targeting a British record eighth Olympic medal – he has four gold, one silver and two bronze – at the 2016 Rio Olympics in the four-man, 4km team pursuit.

The current hour record is 52.491km, set by the Australian Rohan Dennis in February after the UCI, cycling’s world governing body, reformed the regulations, reigniting interest in the event.
