A Thames Water spokeswoman said it had yet to pinpoint the burst main. Local water supplies are affected but no buildings have been reported flooded. A mechanical digger, at the road's junction with Sussex Gardens, was blamed for the incident.
London Fire Brigade said it must wait for the pipe to be switched off. Thames Water switched off the main three hours later, but the damaged road remains closed.
Buses are being diverted around the area. The stretch of road between Edgware Road tube station and Sussex Gardens is expected to remain closed to traffic for a number of days, a Thames Water spokeswoman said.

Customers have reported low water pressure and a cut in water supplies in the area, she added. Hundreds of customers reported low water pressure and water supply problems in the area, she added, but this was now returning to normal.
"We are trying to establish which main the water is coming from," she said. "Once we have done that, it will be switched off." An underground car park was flooded during the incident.
The spokeswoman said the leak occurred after a 24-inch water main was broken.
"We believe it was third party damage, as there was no problem with the main itself," she said.
