Richie Benaud’s best bits, ‘Daddy Ketchup’ and cyclists v train crossings

1) The incomparable Richie Benaud on the infamous underarm bowling incident in 1981, on the run out of Derek Randall in 1977, on Shane Warne’s ball of the century, his final few minutes on commentary in England, and a very nice BBC tribute featuring many of his best moments. 5) Sir Bradley Wiggins has announced he is to attempt the world hour record in London in June. It’s a record with a long and fascinating history. Here’s Eddy Merckx setting the modern record in Mexico City at altitude in 1972, and Francesco Moser breaking the record at the same venue 12 years later. Britain’s Graeme Obree smashed that with his controversial bike in 1993, before Chris Broadman went one better later in the same year. Three new marks were set in 1994 by Obree, Miguel Indurain and Tony Rominger and Boardman took it back in 1996, at which point the UCI decided it was all getting a bit silly.

The governing body decided to make two records in 1997 – a “best human effort” record, in which all mod cons were allowed, and a UCI record, in which they weren’t, which quelled interest for a while but last year they unified the two systems, breathing new life into the record. Jens Voight was the first to set a new mark but the man Wiggins will be looking to beat is Australia’s Rohan Dennis, who went 52.491km this year. (The best human effort record remain’s Boardman’s 56.375km in 1996).

2) Leeds’s very own Josh Warrington fought for the vacant WBC international featherweight title at the First Direct Arena in his home town last weekend. The crowd was rather up for it, plus bonus Vinnie Jones.

4) A little something from the training ground from PSG’s women’s team.

5) The main talking point from Paris-Roubaix at the weekend, other than John Degenkolb’s superb ride to victory, was the group of riders who ignored level crossing signals and rode over the tracks while a high-speed train approached. It’s not entirely unheard of in the spring classics, as this incredible chaotic footage from the 1937 Paris-Nice race and this equally near miss from the Under-23 Tour of Flanders this year shows. And from “Yikes!” to “Awww …” Alexander Kristoff’s young ‘un gets scared by champagne at the senior Tour of Flanders.
