At least 29 people have died in raging brush fires that emergency workers have been unable to quell for nearly a week, the authorities in a region of Siberia said Wednesday. The blazes started in the remote region of Khakassia when small fires set by farmers to burn off their fields spread into neighboring regions, driven by heavy winds. Several dozen towns have been evacuated, and the fires have left thousands homeless.
