1) There’s a huge amount of focus on Tiger Woods at this year’s Masters but it will surely not be lost on him that it is the 40th anniversary of the first time a black player competed in the tournament at Augusta. Lee Elder did not make the cut that weekend but his appearance was no less an historic moment. The BBC’s Witness Black History series recalls the events, speaks to Elder about the tournament, the death threats and his subsequent influence on Woods. As the weekend went on it turned into an absolute classic on the course with a three-way fight on Sunday between Jack Nicklaus, Johnny Miller, and Tom Weiskopf on the back nine. Here Nicklaus remembers what he describes as one of his three favourite golf shots of all time on the 15th in 1975 and this is the putt that made the difference, his incredible uphill forty-footer on the sixteenth. | |
2) With the Grand National on Saturday a difficult descent is always on the cards for some jockeys, many of whom will wish to look away now from this collection. Acrobatics at Wincanton; simply sliding off to the amusement of these gentlemen in the States; a vertical dismount but an impressive remount; some sort of grip failure here right before the line; Animal Planet investigates this heave-ho and a whole host of fail right here including, at the opening, one mount who proves far too eager to leave the track even without a jockey … | 2) With the Grand National on Saturday a difficult descent is always on the cards for some jockeys, many of whom will wish to look away now from this collection. 3) The women finally reach parity with the men at the Boat Race on Saturday, racing on the same course, the same day. A far cry from the first time they took to a surprisingly crowded river in 1927 and from this rather jolly hockey sticks-looking affair from 1965, both wonderfully shot by Pathé. More up to date is this chase boat view of last year’s race and you can meet this year’s crews here, to one of those uplifting rock soundtracks corporate videos adore so much. Oxford are hot favourites to win, although they had to be rescued by the mighty RLNI after their boat sank last week, so a plug for that fine institution and a chance to help by having some fun at their Alternative Boat Race day in April, where they will launch 250 miniature lifeboats down the Thames. | 3) The women finally reach parity with the men at the Boat Race on Saturday, racing on the same course, the same day. 4) A lovely piece of split-screen footage of a McLaren P1 at Laguna Seca, from real life and the Project Cars video game – with the descent through the awesome double ninety-degree left-then-righthander of the corkscrew at the top of the hill on the back straight showing just how much work a real driver has to do. |
5) Alpine skier Marcel Hirscher has won the World Cup title four years in a row but here it’s all about the visuals as he brings glorious technicolour to this downhill run. | 5) Alpine skier Marcel Hirscher has won the World Cup title four years in a row but here it’s all about the visuals as he brings glorious technicolour to this downhill run. |
6) Ridiculous to sublime corner: Venezuela’s Juan Arango performs this tribute to Luis Suárez during a match in Mexico, and then it’s impossible not to smile at this one as Brighton and Norwich fans come together after a game to the tune of Madness’ Night boat to Cairo, and at this screamer from Mauricio Pinilla for Atalanta against Torino. |
Our favourites from last week’s blog | Our favourites from last week’s blog |
1) An absolutely lovely piece of trickery here as Notts County Ladies put one over Arsenal from a free-kick – watch the close-up to appreciate how well-rehearsed and slickly taken this was. | 1) An absolutely lovely piece of trickery here as Notts County Ladies put one over Arsenal from a free-kick – watch the close-up to appreciate how well-rehearsed and slickly taken this was. |
2) Inspired by last week’s tribute to Daniel Vettori who was no mug in the field, we are reminded that Mark Waugh set the standard with this on the offside and this on the on. And a whole lot of others here. | 2) Inspired by last week’s tribute to Daniel Vettori who was no mug in the field, we are reminded that Mark Waugh set the standard with this on the offside and this on the on. 3) The perils of an inopportune goal celebration defined perfectly in this game between the Under-16s of Gibraltar and Macedonia, while the dangers of not keeping one’s eye on the ball are on show when this Aussie Rules man kicks a post. | 3) The perils of an inopportune goal celebration defined perfectly in this game between the Under-16s of Gibraltar and Macedonia, while the dangers of not keeping one’s eye on the ball are on show when this Aussie Rules man kicks a post. |
4) Seriously not for the squeamish as this longboarder takes a spill and encounters a car coming in the other direction. Then another one to take your breath away in this beautiful ballet of coordinated vehicular accident-dodging. However, if one really must taunt Serious Injury and its elder partner The Grim Reaper, then one might as well do it with a fine view over the ocean as this downhill skater proves. Warning: does not contain comeuppance shot of ice cream van appearing round a corner but some damn fine skating nonetheless. And to round off the silliness – a red weeble puts a bin on its head to go down a mountain (actually: Eric Barone’s world mountain bike speed record). | 4) Seriously not for the squeamish as this longboarder takes a spill and encounters a car coming in the other direction. 5) A lovely little film about Italian acrobat and juggler Enrico Rastelli, who made his name in the 1920s with his extraordinary talent. Often juggling with footballs, these were skills that naturally and exuberantly extended to the pitch (at 2m 20s). | 5) A lovely little film about Italian acrobat and juggler Enrico Rastelli, who made his name in the 1920s with his extraordinary talent. 6) Best Haka ever? As performed by the New Zealand bowls team in 1928 , a shame then that their rather elegant and gentlemanly performance failed to intimidate the Mid Wales side who won 29-0. And an opening ceremony of another kind in China: another jaw-dropping performance at the 2014 Nanjing Youth Olympic Games. For younger viewers – yes , they really are people and no it’s not CGI … | 6) Best Haka ever?
